Assistant Director for Student Programs and Activities: University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

The Illini Union at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking a talented student affairs professional to serve as the Assistant Director in the Student Programs and Activities Office. Founded in 1867, the Illinois campus is one of the original 37 public land-grant institutions. It is one of the top comprehensive research public universities in the nation. The successful candidate will be working on a campus with academically talented and diverse student population, including 19 percent international students, 12 percent Asian American students, 5 percent African American students, and 6 percent Hispanic/Latino students from a total enrollment over 42,000 students. As the community center of the University, the Illini Union draws together all members of the University with approximately 16,000 visits of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests on a daily basis.

Position Functions and Major Responsibilities: Reporting to the Associate Director, the Assistant Director will manage multiple tasks while fulfilling the Illini Union goal of building community among students, staff, faculty and alumni of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Assistant Director will work collaboratively with and represent the Illini Union in providing services and support for approximately 1,200 student organizations; in the administration of annual fee income to support student organization’s programs and travel; in providing direction to an active student community service operation; ensuring on-going advisement to the Student Organization Resource Fee Advisory Board, Student Sustainability Fee Committee and Volunteer Illini Projects organizations; and providing day to day management of the student organization office complex.

The Illini Union Student Programs & Activities Office supports the mission of the Illini Union by actively promoting the co-curricular education of students. The position will serve on the management team of a college union that is viewed as a national leader in its field. Specifically, the Assistant Director is responsible for the operations of the Office of Registered Organizations including the registration process of organizations; maintaining registered organization database; providing event and fundraiser approval; and servicing organizations financial systems as related to University and state purchasing policies. This individual works to ensure that organizations are aware and compliant with all University and state policies related to their existence and operations. He/she also supervises staff responsible for the overall administration of the Office of Volunteer Programs, Student Organization Resource Fee (SORF) Advisory Board and the Student Sustainability Fee Committee, along with 2 support staff and a student employee staff of 15-20. Communicates regularly and works with various campus entities regarding all of these areas. Assists the Associate Director with projects and serves in his/her absence, including attending Illini Union and Student Affairs meetings; serving as Illini Union representative on committees (including the University Special Events Committee); and supervising daily departmental operations.

This position does require night and weekend commitments.

Qualifications: Master’s degree plus three years full-time professional experience with student activities and/or college union. Supervisory experience and a commitment to multiculturalism and community-building are required. The successful candidate will have knowledge and experience with the following: student activities, program planning and management, policy and procedure development, budget management, advising and supervising students, an awareness of current needs and issues in the area of Higher Education and Student Activities.

Appointment Status: This is a regular, full-time academic professional position.
