New Workshop Series: SOCIAL MEDIA USE FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
This new workshop series includes a summer workshop and brown bag sessions throughout the 2012-2013 academic year.
Registration for each session is REQUIRED. To register, send an email to: gradwrsp@msu.edu and include your name, department, email address and the name and date of the workshop. Registration is limited.
Persons with disabilities should contact The Graduate School at 517-353-4738 to request accommodations no later than two weeks prior to the session date. Requests received after this date will be met when possible.

Social Media Bootcamp: Social Media Basics
This workshop will cover the basics of social media use for professional development, including what platforms are available, things to keep in mind when setting up platforms, personal branding tips, strategy planning, privacy and security. Registration is required. Students will receive resources for continued use of social media, including resources for learning the platforms.

Social Media Brownbag Series (Fall and Spring Semesters)
Social media brownbag sessions will occur over the lunch hour. Participants are welcome to bring their lunch and a laptop. We’ll focus on specific topics each month, with open discussion and Q & A time. Each session begins PROMPTLY at 12:00 p.m. and will be held in Room 6, Student Services Building. The room will open at 11:30 a.m. each session. Registration is required for each individual session. Participants can register for as many sessions as they like.
Professional Networks – September 19, 2012
This brownbag session will focus on the social media networks LinkedIn and Academia. Get an overview of each, learn how to effectively use these to search for jobs, companies and connections, and share ideas on their use with others in the session.
Media Sharing – October 17, 2012
There are many ways to share media (photos, videos, etc.) on the internet. Come learn about Flickr, Picasa, YouTube, Vimeo, Slideshare, and Issuu, and find out how they can help you to build your personal and professional online presence.
Blogging Basics – November 16, 2012
No, blogs are not dead. In fact, many students and groups on campus use basic blogging software to run entire websites. Come learn the basics of setting up a blog and get ideas on how to put a blog to your professional advantage. This session will also discuss Creative Commons licensing for shared content.
Monitoring & Measuring Social Media – February 20, 2013
How do you determine if your social media outreach efforts are successful? Learn the basics for setting goals for your social media use. This session will also cover using tools (such as Google Alerts, Google Reader, and Social Mention) to monitor keywords on social media.
Mobile & Web Applications – March 15, 2013
Come share your favorite applications, and learn what others have found to be useful for managing time, social media, and life in general.
