Chief of Staff for the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs: University of California, Irvine

Reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor, the Chief of Staff assists in implementing the Vice Chancellor’s vision and goals for Student Affairs, working in close collaboration with senior campus officials.  The Chief of Staff plays a critical support role in strategic planning, decision-making, and execution of decisions, serving as a member of the Vice Chancellors Management Group and other advisory groups such as the Vice Chancellor’s Advisory Team and the Student Affairs Leadership Team.  The Chief of Staff provides advice to the Vice Chancellor and coordination and liaison with other senior campus officials on virtually any matter of interest to the Vice Chancellor, including policy, programs, budget, personnel and community and legislative relations.  The Chief of Staff represents the Vice Chancellor in all manner of situations with tact and diplomacy and requires a dedication to consultation and consensus building.  Manages Student Affairs communications, university commencements and ensures that high priority projects and initiatives are effectively and efficiently managed.

The Chief of Staff manages confidential and sensitive issues for the vice chancellor and develops solutions to a wide range of issues in all areas of campus operations involving the vice chancellor.  The Chief of Staff manages special campus committees and search committees for senior management positions reporting to the Vice Chancellor.  The Chief of Staff performs a wide range of duties requiring tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, diplomacy, organizational skills, flexibility, and strict confidentiality.  Must have the ability to articulate the vision, mission and values of Student Affairs and interpret and implement procedures, processes and policies.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs provides leadership and administrative support to twenty nine units, with an estimated 1,010 employees and 2,200 student employees; and an annual operating budget of $141.1 million.  In addition, Enrollment Service’s Financial Aid Office directly awards over $500 million from over 100 funding sources to 27,000 undergraduate and graduate students at the University of California, Irvine.

There is one Associate Vice Chancellor who oversees the area of Auxiliary Services, Resource Planning and Student Housing and three Assistant Vice Chancellor’s in the following three areas; Wellness, Health and Counseling Services, Dean of Students-Student Life and Leadership, and Enrollment Services.
