Melvin Buschman died on April 2, 2016. He was a professor of continuing education from 1960-85. He also served as an administrator in Continuing Education and Admissions, taught graduate courses internationally and helped establish the Center for Extra-Mural Studies as part of the MSU project that created the University of Nigeria. He served as the center’s director from 1964-66. Buschman received his bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. from the College of Education.
Professor Joseph Dzenowagis died on May 25, 2016. He was a faculty member in the Department of Health, Physical Activity and Recreation from 1954-88, and taught health education. Beginning in the 1970s, Dzenowagis was also a health education advisor.
Mary Jim Josephs, former professor of educational administration, died on Aug. 5, 2016. Josephs held many positions while at MSU, including director of the College of Lifelong Education and assistant provost of community outreach. She joined the college faculty in 1968, retiring in 1999.
John M. Phillips, an associate professor of teacher education from 1965-86, died on Sept. 16, 2016. After earning a Ph.D. in Curriculum in 1969, he served as director of the Teacher Education Center in Grand Rapids, Mich., worked as a school consultant in Torreon, Mexico and supervised groups of student teachers in Belize. In 1976, he received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the university.
