Teach adults? Get the new graduate certificate

December 15, 2011

Michigan State University now offers a Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning for educators working in a variety of postsecondary settings.

Whether they are taking college courses or participating in less-formal workshops and training opportunities, adult learners need instructors who understand what teaching strategies work best in each particular context.

The new three-course certificate program gives educational professionals an opportunity to experience one of the nation’s top-ranked programs in Higher, Adult and Lifelong Education (HALE) without enrolling in a full degree program. Most courses in the sequence are available online.

“This program gives educators a strong foundation to approach their work, regardless of the profession or discipline in which they practice,” said William Arnold, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Administration. “The certificate also represents a credential – an official certificate on their university transcript, which can be particularly valuable in certain settings.”

Candidates, who may also be currently enrolled in a master’s degree program at MSU, must hold at least a bachelor’s degree to be eligible. They are required to take EAD 861: Adult Learning and select two of five additional courses based on individual interests.
