2024 Summer Seminar on Modern East Asia

The 2024 Summer Seminar on Modern East Asia is a professional development opportunity for K-12 teachers to learn about China, Japan, and Korea, interact with MSU faculty and and fellow teachers from across the state, and discover practical, innovative ways to bring this content into their classrooms. It includes fun, hands-on activities and discussions of where teachers can find helpful resources. This seminar provide lunch and can help subsidize housing for teachers who live outside of greater East Lansing.

This program is organized by the MSU Asian Studies Center Ā and the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia (NCTA) at the University of Pittsburgh. Ā It is free and comes with benefits includingĀ a $300Ā stipend, $230Ā worth of free books and teaching materials, option for 30 SCECH hours (pending approval), and status as an alum for future NCTA short courses and study tours. Ā If a teacher lives more than 50 miles away from MSUā€™s campus, there is (limited) funding to cover (most) of the costs for those teachers to stay in a dorm room or nearby hotel room.

Applicants must be a K-12 educator based in Alabama, Delaware, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or West Virginia. This summer’s seminar may be of particular interest to those teaching history, social studies, geography, politics, international relations and world languages or literature but teachers of any subject areas are encouraged to apply if East Asia is in some way relevant to what they do. This seminar will bring together a diverse group of educators, including people who teach a wide range subjects, librarians, administrators, etc. Before applying, please review the dates and times and check your schedules.

    • Kick-off Event: May 22, 2024: 6-8:30pm EDT, in person if possible (MSU campus, dinner included)
    • Full Week Seminar: July 29 – August 2, 2024: 9am-3:50pm EDT, in person (MSU campus, most lunches included)
    • Six-Hour Follow-up Session: FallĀ 2023: In person or Zoom, date TBD
