March 18, 2017
Hosted by Michigan State University
The 2017 MI-AMTE Conversations among Colleagues meeting focuses on how to develop coherent educational systems utilizing the full range of experts available in K-16 education within the state of Michigan. The organizational structure of the one-day meeting is designed as a working conference among an even broader audience in sharing ideas about improving teaching and learning mathematics. The conference includes invited plenary sessions, participant working groups, and solicited talks related to the conference theme. The expected outcomes of the conference include building a shareable knowledge base, future collaborations with a variety of key stakeholders, and an action, plan and/or advocacy recommendations for mathematics and mathematics education.
Conference Theme: Developing Systems to Face the Challenges of Today and Tomorrow.
Mathematics educators in Michigan are increasingly faced with complex issues related to improving teaching and learning mathematics, including highly public federal and state accountability systems, limited financial resources, enrollment declines, increase demand for STEM workforce, and more. These inequities involve educational systems that have wide audiences including policymakers, practitioners, and parents. The goal of the conference is to bring together mathematics teacher educators, mathematicians, and other educational leaders to better understand, respond to, and advocate for mathematics and mathematics education in Michigan at a systems level.
