“Making the Road by Walking It: Critical Ways Forward in/for Teacher Education”
In this talk, Dr. Carter Andrews discusses critical issues facing teacher education and how a department of teacher education can address those issues utilizing humanizing approaches in transformative ways. She describes how her leadership approach and experiences at institutional, program and practice levels evidence enactment of the department’s core principles, and explores a vision of how, as Chair, she can aid the department in advancing those principles over the next five years through research, teaching and outreach.
About Dr. Carter Andrews
Dorinda Carter Andrews is associate dean for Equity and Inclusion for the College of Education and an associate professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University. She studies issues of racial justice in P-20 learning environments, urban teacher preparation and critical praxis with K-12 educators. Dr. Carter Andrews is a former industrial engineer, high school math teacher and kindergarten teacher and has experience teaching in suburban, urban, charger and independent schools. She is the recipient of the 2018 Mid-Career Award from the Critical Examination of Race, Ethnicity, Class and Gender in Education Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association. In addition to numerous honors, she has given two TEDx talks on education—one entitled “The Consciousness Gap in Education: An Equity Imperative” and another entitled “Teach Kids to Be Eagles: Overcoming Educational Storms.” Dr. Carter Andrews is co-editor of the Journal of Teacher Education, and her work appears in several top-tier academic journals and social media outlets.
