Are you interested in helping NASA send a team of humans to Mars? If so, we invite you to participate in a four-session research study working directly with NASA volunteers this upcoming semester!
Background:
The Leadership, Innovation, Networks, and Collaboration Laboratory at MSU, directed by Dr. Dorothy Carter, is helping NASA address the teamwork challenges involved in long-distance spaceflight. The LINC Lab needs your help in order to support NASA and the Mission to Mars! This is an exciting opportunity for MSU students to serve as “ground control” during an experimental research study with NASA. Your participation in this research study will help NASA understand how teams of Astronauts working with Flight Controllers will need to work together to advance the next era of spaceflight.
“Who can participate?”
Any MSU undergraduate student who is available during all of the dates below is eligible to participate in this study:
Session 1: Wednesday, 8/14, 11:30AM – 1:15PM
Session 2: Wednesday, 8/21, 11:30AM – 1:10PM
Session 3: Wednesday, 9/4, 11:30AM – 1:10PM
Session 4: Wednesday, 9/18, 11:30AM – 1:10PM
If you are interested in participating, you will need to attend ALL four of the experimental sessions. The training and experimental sessions will be conducted in-person, on campus, from the Kesseler Teams Lab in the Eli Broad College of Business.
“What will I be doing?”
You’ll be working remotely on a design simulation with spaceflight crew members living inside NASA’s Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA) capsule, located inside the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Although you will be able to come and go for each of the sessions, the HERA crew will spend 45 days in isolation inside the capsule, accomplishing a wide range of tasks. That’s over a month inside a space the size of a Winnebago! We need our MSU volunteers to attend 90-minute experimental sessions a total of four (4) times over the course of the semester. You will be helping us to observe how patterns of communication and teamwork interactions impact mission success. Reach out for more information!
“How can I find out more?”
If you are interested in participating, please contact Caton Weinberger (weinb104@msu.edu.com) as soon as possible. To be eligible to participate, you must be available to attend all four sessions. We look forward to hearing from you!
