The Reading People, also known as The Capital Area Literacy Coalition is a nonprofit organization that provides free reading, writing, and English-speaking instruction to those in need from the Lansing area. They are looking for volunteers with their children’s program, Read to Succeed.
About the program: we provide all our volunteers with free training to teach them how to work with students. In our Read to Succeed program, volunteers are paired with an elementary school student from the Lansing Schools. They meet with their student twice a week as a part of an after-school program, where we have a staff member from our team lead the class in a literacy-based activity or project, and the volunteer provides their student with individualized instruction based on their needs. Meetings take place at the Lansing schools, or at one of our community center classroom sites located in the Lansing Housing Commission low-income housing complexes. Meetings take place after the kids are done with their school day (between 4pm and 6pm) and twice a week, usually Tuesday and Thursdays.
About The Reading People: We’re a 501c nonprofit founded in 1985 by MSU professor Dr. Louis Badder. We provide free and individualized educational instruction to adults and youth alike though a few different programs- adult reading, English as a second language, GED completion, and the children’s Read to Succeed Program. We are able to provide these programs with the help of our amazing volunteers! We currently serve 230 students, and in the past our children’s program was able to serve 300 students.
