Brown Bag Series: Learning Experiences from Cuba: Reflections through Photography
November 6, 2018 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm EST
Join two Michigan State University doctoral students from the Fellowship to Enhance Global Understanding program (FEGU) share their learning experiences and reflections from Havana, Cuba.
Topics include:
Themes of Love in Cuban Culture and Society: A Photovoice Project
Courtney Maldin, Doctoral Student, K-12 Administration
In the spirit of using images to tell community stories, students captured various photos while in Cuba that illustrated their experience exploring issues of race, gender, sexuality, and ability-status in the context of a society that differs greatly from the United States. Of the many photos captures, the group seemed to continuously encounter the omnipresent theme of love. This thee presented itself in various forms such as communal, familial, and relational. Through this project, students hoped to represent the various ways in which they encountered love through literacy, community and education.
Sense Making of the Cuban Narrative
Alounso Gilzene, Doctoral Student, K-12 Administration
This project captures sense making of being in Cuba for a student who grew up in Miami, Florida. Alounso consistently heard only one narrative of Cuba through media and personal interactions. He will share photos different parts of his experience in Cuba and discuss how each of these experiences challenged the narratives of Cuba he had growing up.
