Coaching & Consultation in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support

January 8, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EST

The Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Special Education and the School Psychology program present Dr. Courtenay A. Barrett, who will be presenting on: “Coaching & Consultation in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support: The Potential for Large-Scale Change.” Dr. Barrett is the research and instructional data consultant for the Ingham Intermediate School District.

Talk Abstract:

Effective professional development (PD) for educators that results in improved practices and student outcomes continues to challenge researchers and practitioners alike. Coaching and consultation have been described as job-embedded professional development and may address some of the limitations related to the implementation of traditional PD. This presentation will summarize factors related to effective consultation and coaching, such as interpersonal communication and training, as well as methodological considerations when conducting school-based consultation research. Then, the presentation will review a comparative cost analysis of traditional PD and coaching structures, as cost may be an important factor related to the provision of effective PD services. Implications and suggestions for future research will be discussed.
