Coalitional resistances against curricula of violence: Thinking globally about anti-APIDA/A racism across educational spaces

March 22, 2024 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

Sohyun An and Betina Hsieh present: "Coalitional resistances against curricula of violence: Thinking globally about anti-APIDA/A racism across educational spaces"

In this Brown Bag session, Sohyun An and Betina Hsieh will discuss the ways that Asian & Asian Americans are positioned, position themselves and can use their unique positionalities in solidarity with other marginalized communities across educational spaces in the US and globally. Hsieh will focus on global discourses that shape Asian diasporic people’s experiences and how critical global literacies can be used to understand and confront anti-Asian racism while moving towards stronger cross-racial solidarity movements. An will describe a 5th grade lesson on “westward expansion” and Indigenous survivance documented by two Asian immigrant photographers in the 1900s and discuss Asian American positionalities and responsibilities as what Mashpee Wampanoag Elder gkisedtanamoogk calls “neighbors with legitimacy” in the inherently Indigenous and simultaneously multiracial space.

Speakers:

  • Sohyun An, Kennesaw State University
  • Betina Hsieh, Unviersity of Washington, Seattle
