Confronting Imperial Evasion in Teacher Education

This talk will focus on imperial evasion- the practice of denying imperialism and its effects on schooling and beyond- and the imperative of challenging it in teacher education. Drawing on research and personal experiences, the speakers will discuss students’ engagement with a course on migration and education, how imperial narratives shape educational spaces, the tensions that arise when confronting these narratives, and pedagogical approaches that foster critical awareness and advocacy among future educators.

  • Shireen Al-Adeimi is an Assistant Professor of Language and Literacy in the Department of Teacher Education at MSU’s College of Education. Her research focuses on dialogic discourse, examining how classroom talk relates to students’ learning, teachers’ facilitation of dialogic talk, and the role of pre-service teachers in enacting social justice.
  • Alexandra Allweiss is an Assistant Professor of Comparative/Global/International Education in MSU’s Department of Teacher Education. Using ethnographic and participatory methodologies, she explores how modernity/coloniality is maintained through education while centering youth and community efforts toward disruption and (re)imagining

Clock Time is White Time: The Colonial Legacies of Temporality

This presentation explores whose time maps shape our everyday practices in education, highlighting how the imposition of clock time rooted in European colonial powers–has transformed historical development and daily life. From industrial efficiency to digital synchronization, clock time has become a standardized global system dictating not only work but also personal experiences.

  • Riyad A. Shahjahan is a Professor of Higher, Adult, & Lifelong Education (HALE) at MSU. His research interests include the globalization of higher education, temporality, embodiment and the decolonization of adult/higher education.
