Convening: Social Justice in Education Across Contexts
May 3, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm EDT
You are invited to attend and/or present at a convening on social justice in education! While participants with expertise in a wide range of contexts are welcome, this session is especially interested in learning/sharing about international contexts. The goal is to expand considerations of social justice beyond the US, to consider social justice in education globally.
Please register to attend and/or present no later than Friday, April 19.
Recognizing that “social justice” is not a term that is used in all contexts, it is often used as shorthand to think about people who are marginalized in different contexts and what is being/can be done to address, through education, the injustices they experience. You are invited to learn and share with the group about the following broad questions about a context with which you are familiar:
- What are social justice concerns in your context? (For example, in the US, much of the discussion about social justice centers on race and addressing injustices experienced by BIPOC individuals. However, in other contexts, gender, religion, language, etc. may be more salient concerns.)
- What words are used to describe these concerns?
- How are people addressing these concerns through education?
- How are people preparing and/or supporting educators to address these concerns?
While the hope is to address all four questions during the convening, an individual presentation may only address a subset of the questions.
This session is offering a wide range of presentation formats (and are open to additional suggestions) so that people can share their expertise in a format that feels comfortable and will not represent too much of a burden at the end of a long semester. This session will try to accommodate all presenters who sign up. However, if time and/or space constraints prevent the session from doing so, presentations that are best aligned with the questions framing this event will be selected. Additional information (e.g., time allotted for a presentation) will be provided to presenters as quickly as possible after the deadline.
Organizers: Alicia Alonzo, Anara Akhmetova, Ruth Boamah-Agyekum, and Luqing Zang.
