Transformative Science Teaching to Catalyze Alternative Futures
April 9, 2024 @ 12:00 pm - 1:15 pm EDT
Transformative science teaching critiques mainstream models of science education for promoting the content areas and prioritizing their big ideas while failing to confront the role of science in making society inequitable and unsustainable. This presentation will share research and classroom examples to illustrate how science education might instead act as a catalyst for alternative futures. Transformative science teaching encourages students to study how scientific ideas and practices might be useful in movements for social and environmental justice. Science education as a catalyst for change positions students as transformative intellectuals who are capable of changing science, while also using science to change the world.
In-person event with light refreshments provided. A Zoom option will be offered (registration required).
Speaker presentations will be recorded and and made available on the CREATE for STEM Institute YouTube channel and Community website.
