Department of Kinesiology – Exercise Physiology Candidate Presentation

Thomas Gooding is a candidate for the Fixed-Term Assistant Professor in Exercise Physiology Search in the Department of Kinesiology. Gooding is a postdoctoral research fellow in occupational sleep medicine at Washington State University, where he earned his doctorate in Nutrition & Exercise Physiology.

Biography:

Originally from Paw Paw, MI, Thomas Gooding is a postdoctoral research fellow in occupational sleep medicine at Washington State University, where he earned his doctorate in Nutrition & Exercise Physiology in 2024. In his current role, Gooding provides fatigue risk countermeasures to the aviation industry and is a member of a multi-year, multi-institution research project investigating cardiac emergency risk factors in Ironman triathletes. Gooding’s broader research interests include using a combination of field- and lab-based translational research approaches to investigate the interplay of sleep and physical activity (exercise) on health and performance outcomes. Gooding also holds a bachelor’s (Northern Kentucky University ’13) and master’s degree in (University of Virginia ’15), both in Athletic Training.

Prior to his doctorate, Gooding served as a both athletic trainer and full-time instructor in the Health & Wellness department at Mount St. Joseph University (Cincinnati, OH). Gooding has over seven years of clinical experience working with athletes at the collegiate (Soccer, Lacrosse, Wrestling, Track & Field) and professional (Women’s Ice Hockey, Men’s Soccer) levels, as both an athletic trainer and human performance coach. In his spare time, Gooding enjoys spending time outdoors (running, snowboarding, hiking), reading Sci-Fi/Fantasy books, and spending time with his wife, child and two dogs.
