“A Language-based Approach to Content Instruction: Preparing Mainstream Teachers to Work with Bilingual Students”

This presentation will give a brief overview of dr Oliveira’s research agenda to show the key questions that dive her work. She will focus on a specific strand of the research: A language-based approach to content instruction (LACI) (de Oliveira, in preparation, 2016a, 2016b). LACI is a teacher preparation model developed over the past 10 years of research in content area classrooms with emergent to advanced bilingual students and based on recent scholarship on the language demands of schooling (e.g., de Oliveira & Lan, 2014; de Oliveira & Schleppegrell, 2015; de Oliveira, Sembiante, & Ramirez, 2018; Moore, Schleppegrell, & Palincsar, 2018).

About Dr. de Oliveira

Luciana C. de Oliveira, Ph.D., is professor and chair in the Department of Teaching and Learning in the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Miami, FL. Her research focuses on issues related to teaching emergent to bilingual students at the K-12 level, including the role of language in learning the content areas and teacher education, advocacy and social justice. Currently, de Oliveira’s research examines scaffolding in elementary classrooms and multimodal representation in picture books. She is the author or editor of 21 books and over 180 publications in various outlets. She’s president (2018-19) of the TESOL International Association.
