Engaging Youth in Social Justice Conversations Through Art & Literature

March 9, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm EST

Learn about current public library programs designed to showcase ways we can talk about social justice topics with children.

Throughout the country, there is a growing interest in inclusion and equity programs that tackle tough topics through children’s literature.

This free workshop will teach you how to choose materials, hold age-appropriate conversations, and include activities that extend learning. Explore ways to partner with individuals in your community who have a passion for social justice topics and express your own passion as you make your own screen printed shirt. Librarians will offer inclusion and diversity guides for assessing your classroom environment and provide resources for building a classroom library and curriculum with an eye towards inclusion and equity.

Presented by Rhonda Farrell-Butler and Jason Shoup from Jackson District Library, and Emily Adams from the East Lansing Public Library.
