Ethnography in Education Research Forum
February 26, 2021 - February 27, 2021
Convened by the Center for Urban Ethnography at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education since 1980, the Ethnography in Education Research Forum is internationally recognized for its encouragement of original and in-depth ethnographic research on education broadly defined, within and outside the context of schooling. The Forum provides a space for ethnographers in a range of disciplines and fields to come together across generations to share and learn from each other and, in so doing, to become part of a broader intellectual community. Coordinated by current and former graduate students in collaboration with faculty members, the Forum is committed to advancing systematic, rigorous, and engaged inquiry and to involving students in all phases of the meeting.
Conference Theme 2021: Ethnography in Education: Ethnography & Racial Justice
This year’s theme focuses on the complexities associated with race and inequity that have historically defined social systems in the U.S. and globally.
The program includes notable plenary speakers: Dr. Prudence L. Carter (University of California, Berkeley), Dr. Manuel Espinoza (University of Denver), Dr. Carla Shedd (City University of New York), and Dr. Vaughn Watson (Michigan State University) and Dr. Eve Ewing (University of Chicago). Dr. Joanne Marciano will also be speaking on the The Youth Voices Project for the Communities of Inquiry Featured Session. Dr. Ewing is the 2020 Erickson and Hornberger Outstanding Book Award Recipient. This award is named in honor of our colleagues, Frederick Erickson and Nancy H. Hornberger for their vision, scholarship, and commitment to advancing work in the field as well as their service to Penn GSE and the Ethnography Forum.
