Identity, Power, and Labels: A Critical Examination of Latin* Naming Politics

The categories of race, gender, and sexuality continue to be the site of analysis for many higher education researchers, effectively filling the void of intersectional approaches to student development and learning theory.
Yet, we still struggle with terminology that honors people of Latin American origin and descent identities, let alone their intersections with systems of oppression. Dr. Salinas will engage in a dialogue about the importance of Latin* and Latinx/a/o//i/u identities and labels that have been (misused, (misinterpreted, and have not been fully examined. The goal is to illuminate how the politics of naming social identities can perpetuate structures of power, and work toward transforming higher education through critical naming processes.

Dr. Cristobal Salinas, Associate Professor, Florida Atlantic University
Cristóbal Salinas Jr., Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Educational Leadership and Research Methodology Department at Florida Atlantic University’s College of Education. Dr. Salinas has published more than 75 manuscripts in print, including 6 books, and has delivered over 200 lectures. Salinas is the Founder Editor and former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Committed to Social Change on Race and Ethnicity, and serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Hispanic Higher Education. His prolific writing and research has illuminated the importance of understanding and addressing Latino/a/ student identity and development, and made Salinas sought after by many media outlets A distinguished scholar and advocate, salinas has been awarded over so international and national awards for his commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
