In Our Stories Anything is Possible: A Time-Honored Narrative for Indigenous Education

This talk, presented by SAA & HALE alum Matthew Makomenaw (Grand Traverse Bay Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians), will discuss land acknowledgments, the harm of Indigenous stereotypes, and dismissing deficit language related to Indigenous communities. However, this will be a story of hope, promise, honor and celebrating success. Indigenous people belong in higher education and increasing the visibility of their stories and achievements matters. Strategies to supporting, respecting, and creating space for Indigenous people, knowledge and culture will be explored.

Yale University Dr. Makomenaw earned his Ph.D. in Higher, Adult, & Lifelong Education from Michigan State University and is also an alum of the Student Affairs Administration MA Program. In his roles at Yale University, Dr. Makomenaw supports the Indigenous community through mentorship, programming, and advocacy. He is a higher education academic and professional who is committed
to Native American education, community outreach, and program development.
