Innovations in Collaborative Modeling
August 15, 2022 - August 18, 2022
Participatory modeling engages community stakeholders in the process of modeling complex systems, integrates scientific and local knowledge, and produces models useful for stakeholder decision making and action.
The 2022 Participatory Modeling Field School in Detroit, Michigan, features four days of hands-on workshops, keynote addresses by leaders in the participatory modeling field, and opportunities to learn about and model problems of concern to urban communities like Detroit.
Workshops are designed to cover all aspects of a participatory modeling project, including:
- How to identify and formulate problems of concern to communities for modeling
- How to develop a modeling team and manage power dynamics by design
- How to select the right modeling technique(s) for a particular problem
- How to engage community stakeholders throughout the modeling process
- How to model complex problems with community partners
- How to design, monitor, and evaluate a participatory modeling project
Participants will have the opportunity to learn the basics of two participatory modeling techniques from among four: agent-based modeling, fuzzy cognitive mapping, system dynamics modeling, and social network analysis.
Who Should Attend?
- Faculty and students interested in learning about participatory modeling and engagement techniques, systems thinking, and how they can be used to address complex problems
- Community members interested in learning how to more effectively address complex community problems using systems thinking and participatory modeling
