Introduction to R – Part 1

February 9, 2024 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EST

Do you need R for your research but are not sure where to start? Have you tried learning R but struggled to learn on your own? This is for you!?

You are invited to participate in a workshop designed as an accessible and inclusive resource on how to learn R. This workshop will include a 60-minute seminar (Part 1), access to a curated set of resources for learning R, and a 90-minute working session (Part 2) to engage with the resources along with other R learners to complete data-driven tasks.

Register for Part 1 here.

Part 1 (online – 60 minutes, Feb 9, 12-1PM)

This seminar will discuss:

  • The capabilities and utility of using R in your research?
  • The basics of using R and RStudio?
  • How to load, manipulate, summarize, and visualize your data?
  • Exposure to commonly used R packages such as tidyr, dplyr, and ggplot2?
  • How to explore and learn to use new functions and packages in R?
  • Recommendations for trouble-shooting errors?
  • A collection of resources designed to help you learn R?

Part 2 (in person – 90 minutes, Feb 16, 3-4:30 PM Olds Hall 109)

In this working session, you will have the opportunity to complete data-driven exercises of your choice alongside other R learners with access to instructor assistance. This working session aims to put into practice ideas and resources presented in Part 1 and help you start using R in a self-directed way for your own work. If you did not attend Part 1, this may not be appropriate for you. Optional: You can bring your own project data and ideas on how data manipulation, visualization, and reporting techniques can be applied in your research.
