K-12 Schools: Moving Past Pandemic Recovery
April 7, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm EDT
MSU’S Institute for Public Policy & Social Research’s (IPPSR) April Public Policy Forum signals a key anniversary—the date nearly 12 months ago when many Michigan teachers and students moved to remote learning amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. As Michigan moves past the one-year mark, schools are returning to on-site learning and teachers, parents and pupils are navigating the challenges of a mid-year transition.
The forum will look beyond the pandemic to ask: What challenges are head as parents, students and teachers transition to classroom education? What does K-12 education look like in a strong recovery? What changes and new models of learning are in Michigan’s present and future?

The forum welcomes Douglas Harris, Tulane University professor of economics and author of “Charter School City.” He’ll talk about lessons learned in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and lead off a discussion about public schools’ post-COVID recovery.
PANELISTS:
- Andraé Townsel, superintendent, Benton Harbor Area Schools
- Douglas Harris, MSU graduate, professor of economics and Schlieder Foundation Chair in Public Education at Tulane University
- Paula Herbert, president, Michigan Education Association
- Nicholas Paradiso, vice president of government relations and partner services, National Heritage Academies
IPPSR Director Matt Grossman will host the event. MSU Office of K-12 Outreach Director Bryan Beverley will moderate the discussion.
The event is co-hosted by the MSU Office of K-12 Outreach.
