Language Diversity Speaker Series: “Our Languages Need a Place to Land”

January 23, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm EST

“‘Our Languages Need a Place to Land’: Approaching Language Diversity Research Through Community Relationships”

Del Hierro and Gonzales argue that research on language diversity should center relationships between communities, histories and lands. Through examples of community-driven work conducted with Indigenous language interpreters and translators as well as hip hop practitioners, this presentation illustrates how language without attention to race, place and history can perpetuate the damage-centered research (Tuck, 2009) that ignores colonial ideologies embedded in many discussions of multilingualism and globalization.
