Literacy Colloquy:SoJungKim-Living together in a diverse world
March 19, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm EDT
Despite the increasing emphasis in multicultural/bilingual education and critical literacy pedagogies, little is still known about how literacy teachers can open discussions about race and gender with young children, especially in bilingual classrooms. This presentation will describe the possibilities and challenges of early critical literacy as a space where young children examine children’s literature critically and creatively and articulate their voices about racial diversity and gender equality. During the presentation, a variety of children’s books that deal with race and gender issues will be presented and young children’ responses to these books will be analyzed. The presentation will conclude with the implications for literacy/bi-literacy education and multicultural education in the 21st century.
Dr. So Jung Kim is an assistant professor in the Department of Teacher Education at the University of Texas at El Paso. She earned her doctoral degree in Elementary Education with a specialization in Language and Literacy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Kim’s primary areas of research include multicultural children’s literature, sociocultural perspectives, bilingual/biliteracy development, and early critical literacy/critical media literacy. As a former teacher in the US and South Korea, she has conducted various research studies in different educational settings such as classrooms in South Korea, Korean-English bilingual classrooms in the US, and Spanish-English bilingual contexts on the US Mexico border. She has published more than 25 research articles in peer-reviewed journals. Through her research and teaching, she aims to understand how literacy teachers can create a secure and stimulating learning atmosphere where young children think critically and respect others in a racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse world.
