“Perturbation: a likely cause and a potential prevention strategy for ACL injuries and falls”

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is one of the most common severe injuries in sports. Most ACL injuries occur without external objects directly contacting the knee joint, but about one-third of ACL injuries are associated with contact with the trunk and/or arms near the time of injury. Boyi Dai will first present his research on how self-initiated and external trunk perturbation may affect jump-landing mechanics associated with ACL injuries and his plan for perturbation training and ACL injury prevention. Meanwhile, falls, trips and slips are among the top three causes of nonfatal occupational injuries. Trips and slips create perturbation to the dynamic relationship between the body and the base of support, and falls occur when people do not recover from the loss of balance. Dai will then present his research on occupational injuries, tripping and fall risks, and his plan for perturbation training and fall prevention.

Presenter:

Boyi Dai received his Ph.D. in Human Movement Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is currently a professor in Kinesiology and Health at the University of Wyoming. Dai’s background is in injury biomechanics and ergonomics. His current research includes anterior cruciate ligament injury risk during perturbed jump-landing tasks, exoskeleton and lower-back loading during occupational tasks, and perturbation and falls in workers. Dai has published over 70 journal articles and received funding from the NSF, Wyoming INBRE and RMCOEH. Dai is a fellow of the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports and serves as an associate editor for Sports Biomechanics. He has won multiple college and university-level teaching, research and mentoring awards.
