Racism is Permanent: So What Next for STEM Education?

April 5, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:15 pm EDT

In this talk, Dr. Niral Shah will draw on Derrick Bell’s theory of racial realism to reflect on the possibilities and limits of anti-racist work in STEM education. Mobilizing Bell’s claim that racism is permanent, Dr. Niral Shah asks: what are the implications for how we design anti-racist versions of STEM education? And further, can any version of STEM education actually produce racial justice for BIPOC communities?

In-person in the CREATE for STEM Seminar space (light refreshments provided) or attend via zoom. Register for zoom here.

Additionally, Dr. Niral Shah will meet with grads/postdocs from 1:45 – 2:30pm in the CREATE large conference room; no RSVP needed, just come as you are and feel free to bring your lunch. Niral will be eating then, as well.

Speaker:

Dr. Niral Shah, Associate Professor, Learning Sciences & Human Development, College of Education, University of Washington
