Remembrance Conference 2024
February 11, 2024 - February 13, 2024
Please attend this conference, February 11-13, for remembrance and to build leadership for a public health approach to the epidemic of gun violence. This event is hosted by the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo in collaboration with the AAMC.
As two medical schools impacted by gun violence, this conference invites other medical schools to send teams of 3-4 students (or residents) and a faculty member to share public health approaches to address gun violence. Participants will have opportunities to engage with national trauma experts, work on advocacy skills with elected officials, and remember those we have lost.
The focus is on developing teams from medical schools who can engage their community in conversations, curriculum and programming that uses a public health approach to reduce gun deaths and injury.
Remembrance is a powerful experience. The group will be asked to collectively share memories. At this conference, there will be a remembrance event at the conference and teams are invited to join the “Sharing What We Bring” session on the first night. Participants will have an opportunity to attend a public event on February 13, marking one year since the Michigan State University shooting that left three MSU students dead and five gravely injured. While science and data should always be the basis of public health work, remembrance and experience provide impendence and clarity to our work.
