Science Gallery Detroit: Grief During a Time of Joy

Science Gallery Detroit is pleased to partner with Michigan State University researchers and faculty to present a virtual program that addresses mental health and emotional wellness during the holiday season. Hosted by Natasha Miller, Science Gallery Detroit’s Community Engagement Manager, Grief During a Time of Joy is a live, one-hour panel that will feature three experts from the University discussing anxiety, loss, and seasonal depression. The panel will be followed by a 30-minute question and answer session with the audience.
This year, we have faced unparalleled disruptions and losses in our daily lives. With the end of the year and the holiday season approaching, Science Gallery Detroit and Michigan State University would like to provide some relief, comfort, and connection to our communities.
- Anthony M. Avellino, MD, MBA, became Assistant Provost for Student Wellness, Health and Safety, and chief medical officer for HealthTeam in February 2018. Avellino, a highly regarded pediatric neurosurgeon, built his career caring for young people and their families, including a deliberate focus on creating support and systems that emphasize health and wellness.
- Natasha T Miller is a Detroit, MI native, performance poet, LGBTQ activist, and film producer. Natasha has been a member of four national slam teams, starred in a national sprite commercial, a Shinola CNN ad, and she is a Women of the World Poetry Slam 3-time- top five finalist. She has awed audiences across the world at more than a hundred universities, and venues, performing in stadiums for as many as thirty thousand people. She has been featured in magazines such as Vogue, Entrepreneur Mag, and many more. Natasha currently tours the world using her words to enlighten, create equality, and most importantly spread truth, and forgiveness in the tradition of so many great leaders before her.
- Abigail Waller, LMSW, is a counselor at Michigan State’s Counseling and Psychiatric Services. She has worked as a mental health clinician with children and adults in Boston, London UK, Melbourne Australia, and Lansing. She is also a bereaved parent. In December 2013, her son died of terminal brain cancer at the age of 5. She co-founded the Art For Charlie Foundation in 2012 and the Children’s Palliative Care Coalition of Michigan in 2015, both of which promote the advancement of pediatric palliative care and support for families who have lost a child. She is committed to educating about grief and doing whatever she can to support those who are grieving.
