Interrogating Curricular Choices in Public Schools
In this talk, Martinez K’awaika-meh, Laguna Pueblo (she/ella/k’uu), will use a case study involving a class assignment about heritage in September 2024 at a large public school in central New Mexico to highlight the ongoing curricular violence that Indigenous children and racially marginalized children continue to face in contemporary public schools. The issues discussed are the critical analysis of an assignment, the context of the school, and the larger implications for curricular choices on student experiences in public schooling. The analytical lenses used are Tribal Critical Race Theory (Brayboy, 2005) and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies (Paris & Alim, 2017).
