Writing High-Impact Papers

Participants will be guided through reporting guidelines from the EQUATOR Network (https://www.equator-network.org) for randomized trials, observational studies, systematic reviews, and for diagnostic and prognostic studies. These were developed for health research, but apply to other disciplines. Participants will be able to apply these guidelines to improve the writing of their manuscript or of a conference abstract. Participants will be able to write a conference abstract for their own research or critique an existing abstract in their research field.

Cost: Free without certificate (no capstone project) or $59 for certificate with instructor graded capstone project (conference abstract review and constructive comments)

Requirements for a certificate:

  • Participants will need access to MSU D2L to access the online modules.
  • Five online quizzes (4 questions each) to be completed by May 1, 2022
  • Conference abstract to be submitted by May 1, 2022

Modules (include reading materials, lecture slides and video, quizzes)

  1. Introduction to reporting guidelines and overview of study designs
  2. CONSORT Statement: reporting guidelines for randomized trials
  3. STROBE Statement: reporting guidelines for observational studies
  4. PRISMA Statement: reporting guidelines for systematic reviews and meta analyses
  5. TRIPOD: reporting guidelines for diagnostic or prognostic prediction models

Each module has an online quiz (unlimited attempts) that is automatically graded within D2L. The capstone project is instructor graded.

Certificate

Submission of correct answers to quiz questions and a capstone project that involves writing or critiquing a conference abstract with a type of study covered in the modules, or another individualized prior client agreement, are required for receiving a certificate.
