Youth Dealing with Trauma: A Panel Discussion on What Educators and Parents/Guardians Can Do

This is the first in a specialized series hosted by the College of Education’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to support educators, health professionals and families with addressing youth trauma. The series is being offered in person (252 Erickson Hall) and online and is open to the public.

The moderator is Interim Associate Dean Terry Flennaugh; there will be closing remarks by Dean Jerlando F. L. Jackson.

PANELISTS

• Curtis Lewis is an assistant professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University. He specializes in the philosophy and implementation of restorative practices and culturally sustaining pedagogy in K-12 schools. His research and experience focus on strategies for recruiting, engaging and retaining Black male educators in K-12 schools, and the inequities within those schools that prevent students of color from attaining success and a liberatory educational experience.
• Greta McHaney-Trice is a former elementary teacher with over 33 years in the classroom and working in administration. She was honored to be selected as the Michigan State University Alumni Teacher of the Year in 2010. She co-authored a chapter in the book: “Inside Our Schools, Teachers on the Failure and Future of Education Reform” (2017). Post-retirement, she worked as a supervisor of restorative justice programs, and then as executive director at Resolution Services Center of Central Michigan.
• Brandon Lane is the executive director of programming and partnerships for the Black Male Educators Alliance. He supports the engagement of Black male youth and partners with educational agencies at the local, state, and national level to support recruiting and developing leaders of education.
