What Can I Do With a KIN Major – Pt. 1

October 6, 2016

Did you know that each year a handful of KIN graduates go to work for insurance companies? Why would they want to work there? That isn’t KIN-ish…or is it?

Using Transferable Skills

Many student don’t know that insurance companies often recruit from MSU to fill full-time (and sometimes internship) positions that involve things like analyzing claims and providing client representation. They are one industry that truly looks at all majors to diversify their team of professionals. Although these positions do not necessarily involve movement and exercise, kinesiology majors are indeed a great fit. Why? Because of the transferable skills you’ve learned and practiced in your internships, volunteer work, part-time jobs, etc. These skills can include good communication, analytical ability, sound judgement and reasoning, and a true desire to help people.

When asked why he likes to hire bachelor of science majors from MSU, the recruiter from one insurance company said this:

“These candidates will be excellent in their craft with deep knowledge and broad hands on experience and application. They will also come with the critical communication skills necessary to explain to business leaders not only what the data says, but also why.  They will approach problems with focused intensity and methodically break down the issue into solvable pieces.  If you have a complex issue, you will always want a Spartan who graduated from the sciences in your corner.”

Two common entry-level insurance positions are described below. Some may surprised that they are not sales positions.

Claim Representative

Investigates, evaluates and determines the appropriate disposition of all types of claims arising out of business written by our independent agents. A claim representative reviews various policies, analyzes coverages, and meets with parties involved with claims in an effort to bring the claim to a fair, efficient and timely conclusion. The claim representative must possess good interpersonal communication skills, exhibit good judgment and sound reasoning, and have the ability to multi-task. The claim representative’s work can be exciting, challenging and very diverse.

Underwriter

Utilizes professional and technical expertise to review and analyze insurance applications from agents. They negotiate premiums, coverages and acceptability based on the information presented. Their decisions are based on knowledge, judgment and reasoning. An underwriter must have sound judgment, be an analytical thinker, look for answers and possess the ability to develop sound decision-making skills.
