President’s Student Council Nominations
AY 2025-2026
Objective: The Michigan State University’s President’s Student Council, led by the university president in collaboration with Student Life & Engagement (SLE), Associated Students of Michigan State University (ASMSU) and Council of Graduate Students (COGS) leadership, works to ensure the voices of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students are being heard by administration. This council also aims for its members to provide advice to university leadership on pressing matters impacting Michigan State. This council acknowledges the work that undergraduate, graduate and professional students do, and welcomes the opportunity to hear more voices from the student population. Along with ensuring that students are being heard, the president and other university leaders can gather feedback from selected students on progress made for various initiatives (sustainability, strategic plan, DEI, etc.) Finally, this council aims to further enhance the collaborative leadership between the student body and the administration to continually improve the Spartan experience.
Time Obligations: Two meetings Fall 2025. Two meetings in Spring 2026. Meetings will be scheduled for September, November, January and April. Specific dates/times will be relayed to accepted students.
Application: nominees from SLE, ASMSU, COGS and the Dean of all Colleges will submit an application that includes biographical information and answers to the questions below. The application link will be provided by nominator. Students must fill out the application and not the nominator.
Organization:
- President’s Council will consist of 10-13 students across a variety of class levels and disciplines who are engaged in a variety of academic and extracurricular activities.
- Regular participation in Council activities will be essential if it is to be effective. Members may have work to complete outside of the scheduled meetings.
- Therefore, if an individual misses more than two meetings, they may be dismissed from the Council.
- A chair will be self-selected.
Members: Nominated from SLE, ASMSU, COGS, and the Dean of all Colleges
- The Council is composed of a diverse group of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.
- All students on the Council are selected through an inclusive selection process representative of various areas of campus and student backgrounds (on- campus, off-campus, transfer, in-state, out-of-state, first generation, etc.).
- Students can express interest in the council to their deans. Students who are members of ASMSU and COGS can express interest in being nominated. Students who are in leadership roles in SLE can express interest in being nominated.
- Students will receive a link to an application to submit.
- The Office of the President will approve applications.
Application questions:
Brief biographical information and in 100 words or less, please answer the following questions:
1. With what groups or organizations are you involved and why?
2. What is most important to student success at Michigan State University and why?
3. What changes would you want to make to Michigan State University and why?
4. What issues do you wish students at MSU knew more about, and if chosen, how would you advocate for this issue?
5. What do you love about MSU?
Application review:
Applications will be reviewed and vetted through Office of Student Support and Accountability. Materials from recommended students will be presented to the President.
Deadline to nominate March 25. Students will have until April 4 to complete the application.
