Dr. Currie is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, a Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP; Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology), and the Director of the Exercise & Cardiovascular Health Outcomes Lab. She received her Ph.D. from McMaster University (Hamilton, Canada) where she examined the effects of low-volume, high-intensity interval exercise training on cardiovascular health in individuals with coronary artery disease. Following this, Dr. Currie completed postdoctoral fellowships at the Universities of British Columbia and Toronto and McMaster University where she continued to examine cardiovascular health outcomes in a variety of populations including individuals with spinal cord injuries, Olympic and Paralympic athletes, and children. Dr. Currie is trained in exercise testing and a number of cardiovascular assessments including echocardiography, flow-mediated dilation, arterial stiffness and blood pressure measurements. Her research focuses on the acute and chronic cardiovascular responses to exercise to understand individual responses to exercise and exercise training.

Graduate Students

Amy Boettcher, M.S., CEP
Ph.D. Student
she/her/hers

Amy is a second year Ph.D. student in the Department of Kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise physiology. She received her MA in Exercise Science from Northern Michigan University (’19).  After working with Cardiac Rehab patients in Port Townsend, WA, she is returning to school to study cardiac adaptations to exercise. She is also interested in researching how hormonal differences between sexes may impact cardiac responses to exercise. She currently serves as a research assistant working with Dr. Katharine Currie.

Wesley Blumenburg, M.S.
Ph.D. Student
he/him/his

Wesley joins our lab from Charleston, South Carolina. He is a first-year Exercise Physiology Ph.D. student whose research interests include investigating modifiable lifestyle factors that may contribute to cardiovascular disease burden. Wesley received his bachelor’s degree from the College of Charleston and completed his M.S. at Georgia Southern University (Armstrong) in Savannah. A fun fact about Wesley is that he loves to play guitar in his free time. He is always learning new songs and practicing when he is not working.
