Professors Janet Alleman and Jere Brophy
Professor of teacher education Janet Alleman has been honored by the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) for her tireless efforts to improve social studies education through research.
Alleman, a faculty member at MSU since 1968, received the Jean Dresden Grambs Distinguished Career Research Award during the council’s annual conference in Denver on Nov. 13, 2010. The award recognizes professionals who have made extensive contributions to knowledge concerning significant areas of social studies education.
Alleman said she shares the honor with her long-time colleague Jere Brophy, an intellectual giant in the fields of education and psychology who passed away suddenly in October 2009.
Together, Brophy and Alleman developed frequently cited guiding principles for good primary classroom activities and co-authored many articles and volumes on effective social studies teaching. Their book on children’s thinking about cultural universals received the 2006 Exemplary Research in Social Studies Award from NCSS.
With practicing educators as partners, the pair continued to produce valuable scholarship including two books published in 2010.
