Assistant dean named honorary member of international research organization

October 14, 2010

Professor John (Jack) Schwille was recently elected as an honorary member of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) – a distinction shared by just 21 people (13 living) around the world.

Schwille, the college’s assistant dean for international studies in education, was selected for making significant contributions to IEA over 38 years with involvement in international research projects. He is currently co-principal investigator of the IEA-sponsored Teacher Education Study in Mathematics (TEDS-M) and has worked on major studies related to civics, mathematics and other subject matters. His service to IEA began in 1972 while he was a Spencer Fellow at the University of Stockholm.

Schwille received the honorary membership as a surprise during the organization’s General Assembly meeting in Botswana during October 2010.

IEA’s membership consists of one research or assessment agency in each of more than 6o participating countries. The organization is devoted to cross-national education research and assessment.
