Remembering August “Jerry” Benson, former MSU faculty, alumnus

August “Jerry” Benson, a former Michigan State University associate professor, advisor and alumnus, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, 2011. He was 94.

Benson’s career at MSU spanned from 1964-83. He earned his master’s degree (’59) and Ph.D. (’69) from the MSU College of Education. According to family, Benson was a proud Spartan fan and a goodwill ambassador for MSU. He was active with various MSU organizations, including the Spartan Fund (formerly known as the Ralph Young Fund), the Rebounders’ Club and the Downtown Coaches Club.

Benson was a leader in several state, regional, national and international education associations. From 1974-75, he served as president of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, during which he sent U.S. educators to Japan, Taiwan and the Middle East. He also served as chairman of numerous educational committees, and led workshops about international education exchange.

Benson’s eventful life also included 20 years of service to the United States Air Force during the World War II era. A giver at heart, Benson also enjoyed making charitable donations to various organizations, including the American Red Cross, Catholic Relief Services, the American Heart and Alzheimer’s Associations and the Parkinson’s and Arthritis Foundations.
