As Michigan State University continues to monitor and respond to the novel coronavirus pandemic, with an emphasis on protecting the health of all Spartans, the College of Education is pleased to share some good news.
MSU is ranked No. 2 in the world for education, according to one widely used international ranking of universities.
“I am pleased the College of Education has remained near the top of the world ever since the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects began to publish a ranking for the field of Education,” said Robert E. Floden, dean of the College of Education.
This is the third consecutive year MSU has been named among the top four global institutions in the field by these rankings. The most recent results were released in June 2020 by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, an independent organization focused on higher education research. In August 2019, MSU was named #1, after previously being #4 in 2018.
“While we recognize that these, and other, rankings do not capture all dimensions of institutional quality,” Floden continued, “the Shanghai rankings clearly show that our faculty are leading contributors to research on key problems in education.”
Looking ahead
More than 1,800 universities from 90 countries are ranked each year in the Shanghai rankings. The results are based on a number of indicators, including the number of papers (including those with international collaborators) published in top research journals authored by faculty, significant awards won by faculty and more.
The College of Education offers a wide range of academic programs related to education at the primary, secondary and postsecondary levels, which are taught and led by renowned scholars.
“Our faculty combine disciplinary expertise with deep understanding of practice and policy,” Floden added. He also noted that the college and its scholars address pressing problems of education, with particular attention to issues of equity, inclusion and access.
Recognizing excellence
The Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects is one of several rankings that places MSU among the top institutions in the field of Education.
The 2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, released in November 2019, placed MSU at No. 12 on the education list. In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject, announced in March 2020, Michigan State ranks No. 18 for education, holding its position from 2019. Those rankings are “based upon academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact.”
The MSU College of Education is perhaps best known for being ranked #1 in the United States for both elementary and secondary teacher education for 26 consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report. Currently, MSU also ranks #1 nationally for curriculum and instruction and for rehabilitation counseling.
