Michigan State University, a leading institution in the field of education, remains home to some of the most prestigious and highly-ranked online master’s degree programs in the country.
According to U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings, MSU moved up 14 spots overall from 2022 and has four specialty programs in the top-10.
The college ranked:
- #1 in Curriculum and Instruction
- #2 in Educational Administration and Supervision (up from #4 last year)
- #6 in Educational/Media Design (down from #5 last year)
- #7 (tie) in Special Education
- #10 (tie) overall

L. Jackson, dean of the MSU College of Education. “These top rankings confirm that our graduate students are using their strong knowledge base to excel in their fields of practice.”
MSU’s education programs remain strong in the specialty rankings, which are now in their third year. The lengthy 12-page methodology guide outlines how rankings are determined. Areas such as engagement, faculty credentials & training, and a peer assessment survey make up 70 percent of the score.
Within the area of engagement, U.S. News evaluates class size, graduation rates, best practices, one-year retention rates and time to degree deadlines. In this year’s list, 338 institutions were evaluated, matching 2022.
The MSU College of Education offers 10 fully online and hybrid master’s programs:

- Master of Arts in Education (MAED)

- (Hybrid) Master of Arts in K-12 Educational Administration
- Master of Arts in Teaching and Curriculum (MATC)
- Master of Arts in Special Education Leadership: Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
- Master of Arts in Special Education (Learning Disabilities or Autism Spectrum Disorders)
- Master of Science in Sport Coaching and Leadership
