Laura Roehler-Carmean, a professor emerita with the Department of Teacher, died on March 14, 2024 at the age of 86. Roehler-Carmean was with the College of Education from 1972 until her retirement in 2003.

During her time with MSU, Roehler-Carmean led research teams in studies of teacher decision making, was a member of the Institute for Research on Teaching and took part in an MSU Overseas Master’s Program. She taught courses internationally in France, Germany, Japan and Thailand.
Roehler-Carmean was also a member of the International Reading Association (IRA) and served on various review boards for professional journals.
Over the course of her career, Roehler-Carmean wrote numerous publications including groundbreaking research articles and authoring/co-authoring textbooks on reading strategies and teacher education.
Roehler-Carmean earned several prestigious honors and recognition throughout her career, including an MSU Excellence-in-Teaching Citation in 1972 and the Outstanding Teacher Education in Reading Award from the IRA in 2002. Roehler-Carmean was also a three-time alumni of Michigan State University earning her B.A. in Elementary Education (1968), M.A. in Education (1969) and Ph.D. in Elementary Education (1972).
