Dorinda Carter Andrews is the chairperson for the Department of Teacher Education and a professor of race and educational equity. She is a former industrial engineer, high school math teacher and kindergarten teacher. Carter Andrews has teaching experience in suburban, urban, charter and independent schools.

Her research is broadly focused on Black education, racial justice and educational equity. Carter Andrews utilizes critical racial and Black feminist/womanist frameworks and methodologies to examine issues of race, culture and power in K-12 schools and on college campuses.

Carter Andrews is currently the principal investigator for a grant that explores racial equity in school discipline for Black students (funded by the W.T. Grant Foundation and Brady Education Foundation). She also works with school districts, universities, municipalities, corporations and civic organizations on developing and maintaining culturally responsive, inclusive and equitable learning and work environments.

Among many honors and awards, Carter Andrews has given two TEDx talks, "The Consciousness Gap in Education" and "Teach Kids to be Eagles." She was named the 2022 Educator of the Year for the NAACP Lansing (MI) Branch. Her insights on racial justice in education have appeared in outlets such as the New York Times, Education Week, and on WKAR, NPR and CNN. Carter Andrews’s research and scholarship has been published in several top-tier academic journals.
