This page overviews the multi-year and recruitment fellowship opportunities for Ph.D. students coordinated through College of Education Academic and Student Affairs department. It supplements information distributed by the Graduate School.
Although international students are not eligible for the UDF or UEF, they are eligible for college awards.

University Distinguished Fellowships (UDF)
- Five-year award for CEPSE, EAD, TE and KIN students.

University CUMREC Fellowship
- One-year, one-time award of $3000-$5000 during fall semester of studentās first year.

College Dean’s Scholar Awards
- Five-year award for CEPSE, EAD, TE students; four-year award for KIN students.
- Annual award for students entering Fall 2024 and later: Ā½ time GA position combined with fellowship to total $28,000. Tuition and health benefits are also included.
- Approx. five awards across the College.
- Students entering Fall 2024 are each guaranteed a Summer Research Development Fellowship of $7,000 to fund research the summer after their first year. If that summer is otherwise funded, the student may postpone this award.
College Erickson Research Fellowship Awards
- Five-year award for CEPSE, EAD, TE students; four-year award for KIN students.
- Annual award for students entering Fall 2024 or later: Ā½ time GA position combined with fellowship to total $28,000. Tuition and health benefits are also included.
- Students must have a strong research trajectory.
- Approx. five awards across the College.
- Students entering Fall 2024 are each guaranteed $4000 in summer funding after their first year of study; if they are selected for a Summer Research Development Fellowship, this will increase to $7,000. If that summer is fully funded, a student may postpone this award. These students are also each allocated $3,000 to support the āhardā costs of research (i.e. participant incentives, software subscriptions) and/or conference travel during their first two years.
College Top-Ranked Recruitment Fellowship
- One-time award of $7,500 to the top four ranked applicants to College PhD programs.
- This award is in addition to whatever other guaranteed award(s) the applicant receives.
- The purpose is to provide additional incentive for the applicant to choose MSU; a number of peer institutionsā standard awards exceed $30,000 annually.
- Four awards across the College.
Submission, selection, and key dates
The below schedule will be confirmed with specific dates and times by mid-Fall 2023.
- By noon, January 10 complete nomination applications are due to the Associate Deanās Office via the Slate UDF College Approval Bin. Nomination template is also due at that time.
- Applications will be available on January 16 in Slate for review and rating by program directors. Rating spreadsheet will be provided by the Associate Deanās Office.
- Rating spreadsheet due back to the Associate Deanās Office by noon, January 22.
- Selection Committee meets to review rankings and cutoff point January 25.
- Associate Deanās office submits applications to the Graduate School via Slate by January 29.

Department Recruitment Scholarships and Fellowships
These awards are not applied to and are only available to NEW, first-time students to a College of Education graduate program. New applicants are automatically considered for any endowed recruitment scholarship or fellowship they are eligible to receive.
Educational Administration
The Department of Educational Administration offers several fellowships, which are awarded on a competitive basis with no application process. They are designed to help recruit exemplary doctoral students. These fellowships are often combined with graduate assistantship opportunities.
Margaret F. Lorimer Endowed Graduate Fellowship In Higher Education (HALE PhD only)
Recipients shall be first-year full-time doctoral students pursuing degrees in higher education. Awards will be made to students with outstanding academic credentials and prior experience demonstrating potential for leadership in higher education. This award is for a single academic year. Multiple students may be selected to receive this award.
Education Leadership Graduate Fellowship
For recruiting (first-year) outstanding doctoral students, intending to pursue full-time doctoral studies in either Higher Education or K-12 Administration. This award is for a single academic year.
Literacy Specialist
Michael Pressley Scholarship in Education
For incoming doctoral level students in the areas of Teacher Education or Educational Psychology with a specialization in literacy.
Masterās Level Department Recruitment Scholarships and Fellowship
Students do not formally apply for these awards. They are only available to NEW, first-time students in a College of Education masterās degree program. New applicants are automatically considered for any endowed recruitment scholarship or fellowship they are eligible to receive.
Educational Administration
The Department of Educational Administration offers one scholarship, which is awarded on a competitive basis with no application process. It is designed to help recruit exemplary students. This fellowship may be combined with graduate assistantship opportunities.
Ann Marie Bolger Memorial Scholarship in Student Affairs
(Masterās degree applicants to Student Affairs Administration program only)
As part of the application process to the masters in Student Affairs Administration program, applicants must submit their resume. To be eligible for consideration for the Bolger scholarship, the applicantās resume must demonstrate evidence of contribution to peer learning, such as service as a mentor, peer advisor or educator, student government leader, resident advisor, etc.
Applicants also provide a professional goal statement which must demonstrate evidence of commitment to the profession of student affairs. The evidence can be demonstrated by clear professional goals, participation in regional or national meetings or conferences, etc.
