The Research Laboratory for Design Learning

At The Research Laboratory for Digital Learning, we strive to understand how students learn in technology-supported learning environments and how to design, develop and integrate innovative technology capable of promoting students’ motivation, engagement, and learning to achieve a positive impact on student success. Our research focuses on areas where technology plays essential roles in supporting meaningful learning, including motivation and engagement in digital learning, technology intervention and learning environment, K-12 technology integration and teacher professional development, innovative research methods such as learning analytics, experience sampling methods, and network analysis. We are particularly interested in multi-disciplinary collaborative projects where innovative learning technologies offer new opportunities to enhance students’ learning and achievement.

The research lab is led by Dr. Kui Xie, Red Cedar Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Special Education. The lab was recently relocated from The Ohio State University to Michigan State University. We are currently recruiting doctoral students to join the Educational Psychology and Educational Technology (EPET) program in Fall 2025, with fully funded graduate assistantships guaranteed for five years.
