What brought you to the SCLA program and what did you want to do with the degree?
I pursued the SCLA program because I wanted to further my education and become a better coach. I felt that pursuing a Master’s was the next step in my journey. I graduated from MSU with my undergraduate degree and was an athlete so green runs deep in my veins and I couldn’t imagine furthering my education anywhere else. The online platform allowed me to live in Florida but still get the education I wanted.
What were some highlights during your time in the SCL program?
I really enjoyed coming to campus for the Summer Coaches School and for the week in-person during my first summer with the program. It allowed me the opportunity to interact with some of my classmates and build connections that I kept throughout my time in the program. Overall, I really enjoyed how the classes challenged me and kept me constantly thinking about how I was coaching and what kind of coach I was becoming.
What was your favorite SCL class and why was it your favorite?
My favorite class was KIN 880 Practicum. That class really helped me to build my confidence as a coach. We took and watched videos of ourselves which allowed me to see my strengths and work through my weaknesses. Being able to see other coaches videos and give and receive feedback was also really helpful. KIN 857 Promoting Positive Youth Development through Sport was another favorite because it directly applied to the age group I work with. It really got me to look deeply into why I coach and what impact I am having on the kids. It reminded me to look at all aspects of development, not just physical.
How did the SCL program prepare you for what you are doing today?
It deepened my overall knowledge and confidence as a coach. It has made me more well rounded in all aspects of coaching.
What is the most important thing you learned during the SCL program?
Confidence. Confidence in myself and my knowledge as a coach.
What advice do you have for current or future students who want to make the most of their degree?
Put your focus into it. You will get out of it what you put in.
