Take care, check-in, be safe

February 14, 2023

On Monday night, February 13, a shooter killed and injured multiple people in Berkey Hall and the MSU Union building. That shooter apparently took his life shortly after midnight. Although the shooter is deceased and lockdowns have been lifted, there are many fears and feelings that persist and may last for a while.

It likely will take each of us quite a while to deal with this trauma—and we will do so in our own ways. MSU’s Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS) (https://caps.msu.edu) is a key resource for MSU students who are dealing with trauma, depression, and anxiety, and MSU’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) (https://eap.msu.edu) is a parallel resource for MSU faculty, staff, and graduate student employees.

People often turn to teachers and leaders in times of crisis and some of you may not know what to do or to say. This list of resources for teaching on days-after may be helpful if you find yourself in this position.

MSU has suspended normal operations for February 14-15. We will not conduct any live Zoom meetings for any of our SCLA courses during this time, which also includes capstone proposal meetings. Individual instructors will work to reschedule those meetings as needed. Please reach out to individual instructors if you need time extensions for any coursework. Classes are canceled for the remainder of the week and will likely resume next Monday, February 20.

As program faculty and staff, we are also available to connect.

Please reach out to family, friends, and colleagues. Connection and support in times of trauma and crisis is essential.
