The purpose of the 501/502 seminar is to guide and support the learning of interns during the internship experience. Use the syllabus to help lead and direct a variety of powerful learning experiences about beginning teaching practice.
Internship Guidebook
An internship includes many key participants who take on challenging relationships that become the basis for successful professional learning experiences for those involved. This guide is designed to provide information, a structure, and guidance for internship participants – interns, mentor teachers, field and course instructors – to help them get the most out of this joint venture.

You will begin collecting documents for your portfolio in October and continue constructing it throughout the year.

Mid-Year Evaluation Form on Field Instruction

Assessment of Progress Form
This form should be used as a tool for discussion. Intern, mentor teacher, and field instructor complete this form as they prepare for the mid-semester assessment conference and end of the semester evaluation.

This guide is designed to provide information, a structure, and guidance for internship participants – interns, mentor teachers, field and course instructors – to help them get the most out of this joint venture.
Mentoring Practices (PDF)
The ideas discussed in this document, Mentoring Practices, are a collection of ideas developed by mentor teachers, program personnel, and those offered in the research literature on mentoring. They are designed to guide new MTs in their work with interns and to provide stimulus for discussion among experienced mentors regarding the deepening and improvement of their own mentoring practices. All participants involved in the internship – MTs, interns, field instructors, course instructors, cluster leaders, program coordinator, Program Director – are invited to work with and further develop the ideas presented below.

Use the Field Instructor Feedback Form (FIFF) to assess four of intern lessons through formal observation each semester of the internship.

Final Report Guidelines (PDF)
Mentor teachers and field instructors write a Final Report for each intern with whom they work. In mid-March, interns should give field instructors and MTs copies of a draft list of their accomplishments to date, so that writers of the report can, from then to mid-April, reflect with the interns on their performance and progress throughout the year. MTs and field instructors will begin drafting final reports, and have the option of attending an Elementary Teacher Preparation Program writing workshop to get feedback on their draft. Some MTs and field instructors write one report jointly and others write their own report separately.

Field instructors will use this “blue form” to keep and maintain a record of visits and observations you make at your interns’ school(s). This form can also be used to keep track of your hours and time in the field.

Course Instructors
Course Instructor Guidebook (PDF)
The purpose of the Course Instructor Guidebook is to provide information related course instruction. In this guidebook, course instructors will learn more about the organization of the Elementary Teacher Preparation Program, develop a deeper understanding of the “big” picture of the program, and learn about developing and teaching within the Elementary Teacher Preparation Program at Michigan State University. The guidebook also provides a useful list of resources and appendices which are intended to aid new instructors in their teaching.
Communication with Mentor Teachers (PDF)
