Upcoming Conference: DEI Conversations in Sport

September 29, 2023

The Institute for the Study of Youth Sports will be hosting its first DEI conference on October 30, 2023. The DEI Conversations in Sport conference seeks to identify topics, provide a space for solution-focused discussion, develop strategies to combat the -isms and -phobias, and equip coaches and administrators with the tools to improve their youth sport environments.

What will I learn?

This year’s conference topic is strategies for responding to and preventing incidents of hate in sport. Conference attendees will learn basic terminology related to equity and inclusion as well as develop preventative strategies and a crisis response plan for coaches and administrators.

Who should attend?

This conference is designed specifically for athletic administrators, sport leaders, and coaches in the state of Michigan. We strongly encourage athletic directors to bring 2-3 coaches from their school. Space is limited to 75 attendees.

Who will be presenting?

Meet the facilitators – Ashley Baker, Ph.D. and Andrew Mac Intosh, Ph.D.

Dr. Ashley Baker is the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging at MSU Federal Credit Union. Formerly, she served as Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer for MSU Athletics.

Dr. Andrew Mac Intosh is Chief Program Officer at RISE, where he helps to educate and empower the sports community into programs for varying audiences and contexts.

When and where will the conference be taking place?

This year’s conference will take place at the MSU Union on October 30, 2023, from 8:30AM-4:15PM. MSU Registration is required to participate. Doors will open at 8:00AM for breakfast and last-minute SCECH registration.

How much does it cost to attend?

The conference registration is $35 (breakfast and lunch* will be provided). This does not include the cost of State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECH).

*Lunch selections have closed. If registering after October 24, please arrange to provide your own lunch.

Can I earn SCECH for attending this conference?

Yes – you can receive six SCECH (CAP level 7) for attending this conference. You must register on the MHSAA website – the cost of 6 SCECH is $25 and is paid to the MHSAA.

Where should I park?

There are several on-campus parking options, including metered and pay-by-plate parking. MSU parking garages are paid – be sure to observe all parking signage. MSU Parking Enforcement will ticket all unpaid vehicles. The closest on-campus parking garage is next to the Olin Health Center ~ Ramp 6, Lot 103 – 449 E Circle Drive (about a 3-minute walk from the MSU Union).

You may also choose to park off-campus. The Albert Avenue Garage (188 Albert Avenue) is nearby, about a 5-minute walk from the MSU Union. Please visit this webpage for further information on parking options in downtown East Lansing.
